TOM DOOLEY
Down Memory Lane with The Kingston Trio. Look them up and order some of their albums...
This is where it all started for me…
In the Spring of 1958, I heard this song on, of all places, The Today Show! After breakfast, I went to my high school and raved to all my friends, “I’ve seen the future of music!” That fall, the Trio did a concert at my Northwestern University, and I said, “That looks like a fun way to make a living—I’m gonna do that!”
This was not a sensible statement for me—I had acted in a lot of school plays, but could never get cast in any musicals based on not being able to carry a tune in a wheelbarrow.
But over the years, I learned how to do this, with some success full-time and part-time, proved this was not talent but a craft that could be learned (if by me, then by anyone!). I remain grateful to the Kingstons for their inspiration and that, to paraphrase Jim Bouton, I’ve spend 60 years holding guitars and banjos and it turns out its been the other way around all the time…
